Job Description


As a Senior Tax Associate at a public accounting firm, you will play a critical role in managing complex tax engagements for a diverse portfolio of clients, including individuals, corporations, partnerships, and trusts. You will oversee tax return preparation, perform technical tax research, and guide junior staff, ensuring compliance and optimizing client tax strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Tax Compliance:

    • Prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns for businesses, individuals, and other entities.

    • Ensure timely filing and compliance with relevant tax laws and regulations.

    • Assist with quarterly and annual tax provision calculations.

  • Client Service:

    • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients on tax matters.

    • Advise clients on tax planning strategies, potential liabilities, and regulatory changes.

    • Build and maintain strong client relationships.

  • Research and Technical Expertise:

    • Conduct technical research on complex tax issues using IRS codes, tax regulations, and accounting literature.

    • Draft memoranda and reports to document findings and support conclusions.

  • Project and Staff Management:

    • Supervise and mentor junior associates and interns.

    • Review work prepared by staff and provide constructive feedback.

    • Manage engagement workflows to meet deadlines and budget expectations.

  • Process Improvement:

    • Identify opportunities for process and efficiency improvements within the tax function.

    • Stay up to date with industry changes and help implement best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (Master’s in Taxation preferred)

  • CPA license or working toward certification

  • 3–5 years of experience in public accounting with a focus on taxation

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. tax codes, GAAP, and compliance regulations

  • Proficiency in tax software (e.g., CCH Axcess, GoSystem, ProSystem fx) and Microsoft Excel

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and time-management skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with international, SALT, or partnership taxation is a plus

  • Familiarity with ASC 740 (income tax accounting) desirable

  • Client-facing experience in a mid- to large-size public accounting firm
