Position Summary:
The Batch & Furnace Manager is responsible for overseeing the preparation of raw materials (batch house operations) and the efficient, safe, and stable operation of the glass furnace. This role ensures consistent glass quality, maximum furnace efficiency, and strict adherence to safety and environmental regulations. The manager leads a team of technicians and operators, playing a key role in long-term furnace strategy, maintenance planning, and process improvement.
Key Responsibilities:

Oversee batch house operations, including raw material handling, mixing, and delivery to the furnace.

Manage the operation, maintenance, and optimization of the glass melting furnace, including temperature control, combustion systems, and regenerator performance.

Monitor furnace performance through data analysis, thermal imaging, and quality metrics to ensure consistent glass quality and efficient fuel usage.

Lead furnace rebuild or repair planning, coordinating with engineering, contractors, and suppliers.

Ensure compliance with environmental permits and emission limits related to furnace operation (e.g., NOx, SOx, particulate emissions).

Manage inventory and procurement of raw materials, refractories, and furnace consumables.

Collaborate with Quality, Hot End, and Cold End teams to ensure alignment of production and quality objectives.

Develop and implement SOPs, training programs, and safety protocols for furnace and batch house operations.

Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of process upsets or equipment failures.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives for energy efficiency, glass yield, and operational stability.
Qualifications:
Education:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
-
5–10 years of experience in a glass manufacturing environment, with significant experience in furnace operations and batch processing.

Prior leadership or supervisory experience is highly preferred.
Skills & Competencies:

In-depth knowledge of glass melting technology, raw material chemistry, and combustion control.

Strong leadership and team management abilities.

Data-driven decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and furnace control/monitoring software.

Knowledge of environmental compliance and safety standards for high-temperature operations.
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with furnace rebuilds, design modifications, or large capital improvement projects.

Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma certification.

Familiarity with ERP systems and manufacturing execution systems (MES).
Physical Requirements:

Ability to work in high-temperature environments and respond to operational emergencies.

May require extended hours during furnace outages or rebuilds.

Occasional lifting (up to 30 lbs), walking, and climbing in industrial settings.
